Max Ernst turns the familiar language of old engravings into a sequence of extraordinary disturbances. First published in 1930, this collage novel places recognisable interiors, figures and objects into relationships that undermine any comfortable sense of reality. Looking becomes a process of noticing what has been displaced, joined or made impossible.
The book combines images with enigmatic language, in an English translation by Dorothea Tanning. Its dream narrative engages with religious imagery, desire and psychological unease; it is a work for adult readers, despite the title. An important example of Surrealist visual storytelling, it offers a different encounter with dark art from the conventional artist monograph: the artwork is the sequence itself, and its atmosphere develops as the pages are turned.
