Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons (1835) by J.M.W. Turner captures the catastrophic fire that engulfed the British Parliament on the night of 16 October 1834. With swirling clouds of smoke and flame reflected in the Thames, Turner transforms the disaster into a sublime vision of light, color, and motion. The painting exemplifies his mastery in conveying both the drama of a contemporary event and the overwhelming forces of nature.
