This is a black and white illustration by Gustave Doré (1832–1883), created for John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost. The scene depicts Satan's dramatic fall from Heaven, as described in the poem. In the artwork, Satan, portrayed with wings and a defiant pose, is cast down amidst beams of divine light breaking through the clouds. The celestial background, with stars dotting the heavens, contrasts with the dark clouds and the Earth below, emphasizing the grandeur and tragedy of the event. Doré's intricate engravings capture the poetic intensity and the sublime nature of Milton's work.
