This haunting, mystical scene depicts a Native American ritual centred on a blazing ceremonial fire, where figures gather in reverent silence as a spirit-like presence rises from the flames. Above, a spectral form—often interpreted as the “Fire God” or a vision of spiritual power—emerges from smoke and darkness, linking the earthly circle below to the unseen realm. Remington abandons action and frontier heroics in favour of solemn atmosphere, using deep shadows, narrow light, and restrained colour to convey awe, fear, and sacred mystery. The painting reflects a rare Symbolist turn in Remington’s work, presenting Indigenous spirituality as powerful, enigmatic, and profoundly solemn.
