This is an illustration by Gustave Doré (1832–1883) created for the 1879 French edition of Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso. The artwork depicts a celestial chariot, pulled by winged creatures, soaring through space towards the moon. The detailed engraving emphasizes the vast, cratered surface of the moon, rendered with swirling textures, and the ethereal quality of the chariot's journey. Doré’s intricate linework and dramatic contrasts evoke a sense of wonder and the fantastical, capturing the epic and otherworldly tone of Ariosto's narrative.
