"The Face in the Abyss" by Virgil Finlay (circa 1940) is a surreal and haunting illustration showcasing Finlay's intricate and detailed pen-and-ink style. The composition features a central, enigmatic glowing face with large, eerie eyes surrounded by elongated, totem-like figures with expressive and grotesque visages. A naked figure falls downward into the abyss, enveloped in flames, while ethereal birds and cascading streams of light add to the dreamlike and otherworldly atmosphere. The work evokes a sense of cosmic mystery and existential dread, blending elements of fantasy and horror with striking visual intensity.
