Henry Koerner’s My Parents II (1946) is a deeply introspective and symbolic painting that portrays his parents within an autumnal forest. The composition features two winding paths—his father walking away into the distance, and his mother seated pensively on a stump—suggesting separation, memory, and loss. The barren trees and fallen leaves evoke the passage of time and the fragility of life, while a small locket hanging from a branch subtly implies remembrance and mourning. Painted after the Holocaust, during which Koerner lost his parents, the work is a poignant meditation on grief, memory, and the emotional permanence of familial bonds.
