The Harpies – Gustave Doré (1832–1883). In this haunting illustration for Dante’s Inferno, Doré renders the gruesome Wood of the Suicides with his signature dramatic precision. Twisted, barren trees metamorphose into tormented human forms, their anguish heightened by the presence of the harpies—monstrous bird-women perched among the branches. With stark contrasts and intricate linework, Doré evokes an atmosphere of desolation and moral terror, vividly capturing the poet’s vision of punishment, metamorphosis, and eternal unrest.
