This work was created for "Jugend" magazine around 1898, it is a haunting Symbolist illustration that personifies "Death" as a shrouded skeleton silently emerging across a frozen lake. In the distance, a lone skater glides unaware, heightening the unsettling contrast between carefree life and the ever-present shadow of mortality. Published during the height of Germany's Jugendstil movement, the work reflects the era's fascination with symbolism, mystery, and the fragility of human existence.
