Princess Tuvstarr by the Forest Pool | John Bauer | 1913

John Bauer’s Princess Tuvstarr by the Forest Pool (1913) sets a golden-haired figure beside dark water within an enclosing woodland. Tall trunks and delicately observed details give the forest a monumental presence, while the princess’s quiet posture draws attention to the pool’s still surface. The small figure appears intimately connected to a setting that also dwarfs her. Restrained colour and carefully distributed light create a fairy-tale atmosphere of enchantment and melancholy, allowing the landscape’s silence to become as expressive as the character at its centre.
