Roger Freeing Angelica (1819) by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867) illustrates a dramatic scene from Orlando Furioso, in which the knight Ruggiero rescues the chained princess Angelica from a fearsome sea monster. Ingres contrasts the hero's gleaming armour with Angelica's vulnerable figure, creating a powerful vision of courage, beauty, and romantic heroism rooted in Renaissance epic literature.
