Józef Pankiewicz’s Cab in the Rain (1893) draws the eye across glistening cobblestones towards a horse-drawn carriage almost absorbed by the night. Small lamps and their broken reflections punctuate the subdued browns and blacks, giving the wet street a rich, shifting surface. The carriage remains deliberately indistinct, allowing atmosphere and reflected light to carry the scene. This concentrated urban nocturne turns an everyday Warsaw street into a quiet study of darkness, rain and the fleeting visibility of the city after dusk.
