Hugo Simberg brings the supernatural into an ordinary domestic setting in Death and the Potato Peeler. An elderly woman continues her work beside a basket of potatoes, while a dark-clothed skeletal visitor stands quietly nearby. The cat, timber walls and simple household objects give the encounter an intimate familiarity. Muted earthy colours and a deliberately direct style allow the painting’s humour and unease to coexist, presenting mortality as a presence within everyday life.
