The Dreamer of Dreams | Edmund Dulac | 1915

Created for Queen Marie of Romania’s fairy tale "The Dreamer of Dreams", Dulac’s illustration accompanies the story of Eric, a gifted young painter whose search for an elusive vision leads him into a strange, enchanted world. Here, the sleeping traveller lies beneath a star filled sky while ghostly figures gather silently around him and a watchful bird stands nearby. The boundary between sleep and the supernatural seems deliberately uncertain, reflecting the dreamlike encounters that shape Eric’s journey.
