Ghost with Severed Head | Kawanabe Kyōsai | 1870

This unsettling Meiji-period painting by Kawanabe Kyōsai depicts a skeletal ghost clutching a severed human head in its mouth, rendered with stark economy and macabre wit. The exaggerated eyes and exposed bones heighten the sense of shock and dark humour, reflecting Kyōsai’s fascination with death, satire, and the grotesque. Blending traditional yūrei imagery with a raw, almost caricatural intensity, the work confronts the viewer with the thin boundary between horror, mockery, and the supernatural in late 19th century Japan.
