A solitary harp stands beneath the moonlight in this atmospheric work by German Romantic artist Carl Gustav Carus (1789–1869). Executed in black pencil heightened with white on gray-green paper, the scene transforms music, moonlight and landscape into a quiet meditation on solitude and the sublime.
