Harald Sohlberg’s Moonrise (1919) frames a golden moon and still sea with dark trees and sculptural coastal forms. Deep blue and violet passages give the landscape a powerful sense of enclosure, while the illuminated horizon opens a more distant, expansive space. The composition balances the precision of its contours with the suggestiveness of nocturnal light. Human activity falls away, leaving an atmosphere of heightened attention in which the familiar features of shore, sky and water acquire a remote and quietly monumental presence.
