Narr (Fool), circa 1903. Illustration by Hans Meyer (German, 1846–1919).

From the series Ein Totentanz (A Dance of Death), this haunting illustration depicts a weary fool encountering the skeletal figure of Death. The work draws on the centuries-old "Danse Macabre" tradition, confronting mortality through stark contrasts, intricate detail, and an atmosphere of dark theatricality.
