Ferdinand Keller’s Sappho (1909) places the ancient poet within a secluded coastal grove, where towering trees shelter weathered stone and a solitary figure in pale drapery. Warm light across the ground and architecture meets the cool movement of the sea beyond, while carved masks and flowering plants enrich the setting with classical associations. The small human presence is held within a landscape of monumental scale, creating a mood of poetic absorption and melancholy. Keller’s richly worked surfaces bring together narrative suggestion, natural detail and the imaginative atmosphere of Symbolism.
