Tamara and Demon | Konstantin Makovsky | 1889

Tamara and Demon, painted in 1889 by Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky (1839–1915), draws upon Mikhail Lermontov’s celebrated poem "The Demon".

The scene portrays the tragic Tamara in the embrace of the Demon, whose love ultimately brings about her death. Makovsky surrounds the pair with deep shadow and supernatural light, capturing the poem’s themes of forbidden love, temptation, death and the struggle between the earthly and the divine.
