Jordaens presents Mary Magdalene at a moment of moral tension, her head bowed in languid stillness as worldly riches are offered before her. An elderly figure presses jewellery into her hand, while a skull rests against her lap—a stark emblem of mortality set against the lure of earthly vanity. Behind her, a richly dressed companion leans in, urging indulgence.

From the darkness emerges a more unsettling presence: a shadowed figure with a distorted, almost grotesque face, raising serpents in its hand. Half-concealed, it embodies the insidious pull of temptation, its form merging with the surrounding gloom. Through dramatic light and shadow, Jordaens contrasts spiritual reflection with sensual persuasion, casting the Magdalene between salvation and corruption.
