William Degouve de Nuncques’s Angels of the Night (1894) turns a formal garden into an elusive nocturnal vision. Winged figures move through curving paths and shadowed planting, their pale forms appearing to belong both to the landscape and to another order of experience. Luminous blue-green tones soften the boundaries between bodies, foliage and air. The garden’s carefully arranged spaces remain recognisable, yet the unusual light unsettles their familiarity, creating an atmosphere of suspended movement, spiritual suggestion and profound quiet.
