Incubus. Illustration Vincenz Georg Kininger (1767–1851), after Salvatore Viganò.

Created after Salvatore Viganò's 1795 ballet-pantomime Riccardo Cuor di Leone, this dramatic illustration depicts the terrifying dream of Countess Marguerite of Flanders. An incubus and other grotesque figures surround the sleeping countess, capturing the supernatural horror and theatrical imagination that defined late 18th-century Gothic storytelling.
