The Funeral of a Viking | Frank Dicksee | 1893

Frank Dicksee’s The Funeral of a Viking (1893) unfolds as a dramatic farewell at the water’s edge. Warriors gather around a longship as flames illuminate its timbers, armour and the restless surf. Raised arms and the sweeping lines of the rigging give the composition a powerful ceremonial movement, while the dark cliffs and heavy sky intensify the fire’s glow. Rich surface detail and a closely orchestrated arrangement of figures transform the imagined funeral into an epic Victorian vision of loss, honour and remembrance.
