Villa d'Este (1892) by Oswald Achenbach (German, 1827–1905) is a dramatic landscape depicting the historic hilltop estate near Tivoli, Italy, bathed in the warm glow of evening light beneath a turbulent sky. Renowned for his masterful use of atmosphere and luminous colour, Achenbach transforms the ancient architecture and surrounding cypress trees into a romantic vision that celebrates both the grandeur of nature and Italy's rich cultural heritage. The painting is held in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, Hungary.
