Wagner depicts Queen Isabella Jagiellon’s departure from Transylvania, presenting the exiled queen in a moment of solemn reflection beneath an ancient tree. The expansive autumnal landscape and distant travelling party heighten the sense of farewell, transforming a historical episode into a poignant meditation on exile, loss and departure.
