Le Pendu (The Hanged Man), created in 1873 by Paul-Albert Besnard, is a haunting etching that depicts the grim aftermath of an execution. A solitary figure hangs from the gallows as crows circle overhead, while a cloaked passerby and dog witness the unsettling scene below. Through stark contrasts and an atmosphere of silence and decay, Besnard explores themes of mortality, justice, and the lingering presence of death.
