John Pettie’s The Sentinel (1873) isolates an armed watchman on a shadowed woodland path. The upright spear and alert turn of the head establish a mood of watchfulness, while a glint of light on the helmet draws attention to the figure’s concentrated expression. A richly patterned animal-skin cloak provides a warm contrast to the cool, dark trees behind him. Pettie’s lively handling of metal, fur and leather gives the solitary figure a vivid physical presence, balancing historical costume with the immediate tension of a silent vigil.
