In Circe Invidiosa (1892), John William Waterhouse presents the sorceress as a commanding vertical presence above intensely coloured water. Her downward gesture directs attention to the liquid pouring from the vessel, linking the figure’s still authority with the disturbance beneath her. Deep blue-green tones and richly patterned surfaces give the narrow composition an almost enclosed intensity. The painting’s power lies in its controlled contrasts: beauty and threat, poised movement and concealed violence, and an outwardly serene figure engaged in an act of transformation.
