M. C. Escher’s Eye (1946) turns an intensely observed human eye into an unsettling encounter with mortality. The skull reflected within the pupil interrupts the familiar structures of iris, eyelid and lashes, bringing a symbolic presence into the act of looking itself. Fine tonal gradations and meticulous detail give the image its concentrated force. At once intimate and impersonal, the composition asks the viewer to consider the eye as both an instrument of perception and a surface in which the observer may confront an unexpected image.
