Size: A4 Landscape

This powerful Symbolist painting depicts the newly dead gathered along the river Acheron, awaiting passage into the underworld. Pale, exhausted bodies lie strewn across the dark shoreline, their expressions marked by fear, grief, and resignation. At the centre, a commanding figure—often identified as Charon or a deathly guide—raises his arm in grim authority, separating the living world from the realm beyond. Hirémy-Hirschl’s dramatic lighting, swirling forms, and monumental composition heighten the sense of spiritual dread, transforming classical myth into a haunting meditation on mortality, judgment, and the inescapability of death.
