Edward Burne-Jones’s The Depths of the Sea (1887) imagines an underwater passage in which a mermaid carries the body of a drowned man. The closely intertwined figures occupy a shadowed space whose muted blue-green tones evoke depth and suspended movement. Carefully observed details give the fantastic encounter a disquieting physical presence. Beauty and mortality are brought into intimate proximity, while the enclosed setting makes the scene feel removed from the world above, creating an image of desire whose emotional meaning remains profoundly ambiguous.
