This dramatic historical painting depicts Copenhagen engulfed in flames during the British bombardment of 1807. The city glows with an apocalyptic red light as fire and smoke rise into the night sky, overwhelming the orderly architecture below. In the foreground, panicked crowds flee amid chaos and confusion, their small figures emphasizing the scale of destruction. Lorentzen combines eyewitness intensity with theatrical lighting, transforming the event into a powerful vision of terror, civilian suffering, and the vulnerability of cities in wartime.
