Theodor Kittelsen’s The Pauper (1894–1896) places a skeletal traveller within a shadowed forest, where gathering ravens and the pale light deepen the scene’s sense of abandonment. Dense marks build the texture of branches and ground, while lighter passages draw attention to the exposed body. The surrounding landscape feels both closely observed and oppressive. Through this contrast between fragile human remains and an indifferent natural setting, the image gives poverty and mortality an austere, haunting presence that rewards slow attention to its intricate detail.
