John Collier’s The Witch (1893) presents an enigmatic figure with the concentrated clarity of late Victorian academic painting. Carefully modelled features, controlled colour and descriptive detail give the subject an immediate physical presence, while the title opens the image to associations of folklore and the supernatural. Collier allows this tension between convincing observation and imaginative suggestion to remain unresolved. The painting’s enduring interest lies in that ambiguity, combining psychological reserve with the atmosphere of a story only partly revealed.
