Hugo Simberg’s The Wounded Angel (1903) places an extraordinary figure within an otherwise sober, earthly landscape. Two boys carry the bandaged angel on a simple stretcher, their serious expressions and deliberate movement lending the scene a striking gravity. Muted colours and a sparse setting direct attention to the relationship between the three figures. The painting leaves the cause and meaning of the injury unresolved, allowing compassion, vulnerability and the burden of care to emerge through its measured gestures and quiet visual restraint.
