Lionel Walden’s Cardiff Docks (1896) gives the industrial waterfront an expansive, atmospheric presence. Steam locomotives, wet tracks and distant ships are drawn together through harbour mist, while reflected lights punctuate the muted blue-green palette. Rails and glistening surfaces guide the eye into the scene, making depth and movement central to its construction. Rather than separating machinery from landscape, the painting allows smoke, water and artificial light to unify them, creating a view of working life whose drama emerges from the weather and the hour.
