Odilon Redon’s Eye-Balloon (1878) transforms the familiar form of an eye into an impossible object suspended above a dark landscape. Its strange buoyancy is made convincing through carefully balanced tones, while the surrounding space gives the apparition an isolated, almost ceremonial presence. The eye becomes something that both observes and is observed, unsettling the usual relationship between viewer and image. Rich dark marks and luminous paper create a concentrated dream vision in which precise description serves an idea that remains deliberately elusive.
