In Moonlight, Isle of Shoals (1892), Childe Hassam gives a rocky coast a restless nocturnal life through expressive passages of green, blue and turquoise. The luminous moon establishes a distant counterpoint to the more immediate movement of sea and clouds. Broken touches of colour prevent the darkness from becoming static, allowing light to circulate through the composition. The painting retains the physical character of the shoreline while making atmosphere its central subject, capturing the shifting relationship between solid rock, moving water and open sky.
