In Pesta Coming (1894–1896), Theodor Kittelsen places the personification of plague within a dark, constricted ravine. Dense hatching gives the rocks and surrounding shadows a tangible weight, while a distant pale opening draws the eye through the composition. The travelling figure’s presence changes the landscape from a setting into a passage charged with anticipation. The image’s menace grows through restraint rather than spectacle, allowing the contrast between enclosure and distant light to carry a powerful sense of approaching calamity.
