Harry Clarke’s The Lady Madeline of Usher (1919) gives a Gothic apparition an intensely theatrical form. The elongated figure appears within a dark doorway, surrounded by intricate pattern and sharply opposed areas of black and white. Fine lines draw the eye across costume and architecture, while the deepest shadows lend the scene a sense of enclosed, gathering dread. The illustration’s precision makes its strangeness more compelling, turning a moment from Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher into a densely imagined encounter with terror.
