In The Peacocks (1896), William Degouve de Nuncques sets pale birds within a park transformed by blue nocturnal light. Their luminous plumage provides a delicate counterpoint to the darker masses of trees and planting, giving the composition a quiet rhythm of emergence and concealment. Softened contours make the setting feel removed from ordinary daylight observation. The birds appear almost suspended within the landscape’s stillness, creating a restrained, absorbing nocturne in which colour and atmosphere carry as much meaning as the visible subject.
