Rudolf Henneberg’s The Pursuit of Happiness (1863–1868) gives the pursuit of fortune a precarious, dramatic form. A rider presses forward across a narrow crossing, while threatening figures and a turbulent landscape complicate the promise of the chase. The strong diagonals and urgent movement propel the eye through the scene, placing the figures within a world that appears fundamentally unstable. Rich detail and theatrical contrasts of light give the allegory its intensity, turning ambition into a confrontation with risk, transience and mortality.
