The Wild Chase | Franz von Stuck | 1889

Franz von Stuck’s The Wild Chase (1889) compresses the urgency of a rushing horseman and hounds into a dark, unsettled vision. Forceful diagonals and interlocking forms drive the composition forward, while the shadowed landscape offers little sense of refuge or stability. The movement feels at once physical and supernatural, as though the chase belongs to a world beyond ordinary experience. Contrasts of light and darkness heighten this ambiguity, giving the scene a concentrated atmosphere of pursuit, danger and irresistible momentum.
